IN SEARCH OF, THE CITY.
ARGIA.
interpretation of a city from Invisible Cities, Novel by Italo Calvino
Sounds of heavy machinery, people shouting, laughing and honking fills the environment with heavy noise. I entered a cafe with the hopes of finding some peace inside. Sounds of the crowd immersed in their loud conversations, fist fights, a large group of people shouting at a screen producing much more awful noise fills me with frustration and I lose all hope of finding peace.
A stranger is constantly trying to have a conversation with me, after a streak of ignorance I vent out all of my frustration. The conversation immediately lights up when she says that she knows exactly what I need. The city of argia, my city. That's where I always wanted to be. I felt that my watch was a small price to pay in comparison to what I was about to gain. With the direction memorized and my hope back in place, I set out to find my city. It didn't take me much long to realize that with all the information I gave her she might have tricked me into giving her my precious watch. With my precious lost and no city found, all hope lost yet again, I returned to my past self, deeply agitated and disappointed. Stripped of the minimal enthusiasm I had remaining, I decided to sleep.
In my dreams I continue my journey to find the city, my city. There, where all the sounds are written inside bubbles of speech. I now enjoy the multi-coloured sounds in front of me. Never have I seen or imagined a city like this. For now, I can see the whole city before me, as though looking through a large window to which is a portal to the inhabitant’s window. Relaxing and meditating in the silence that I long craved for, I see my own thoughts in one of the speech bubbles.
Am I also an inhabitant now, or is this a dream, and if it is indeed one will I be able to visit again?
